Make a Difference Day

2006-10-05
Article Written by: Ray Siracusa

The Volunteer Center of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties is in the process of matching volunteers with service projects for our nationally recognized event, Make a Difference Day 2006. This “National Day of Doing Good,” sponsored nationally by USA Weekend and the Points of Light Foundation, will take place on Saturday, October 28th. This is the time for you and your family, friends, co-workers, fellow club members, church members, bowling team, or golf buddies to step forward and volunteer.

Last year, over 4,000 volunteers participated, garnering national recognition for our Volunteer Center, the contributing businesses, volunteers and agencies. Participation in Make A Difference Day activities strengthens the ties between you and your community in addressing a range of social concerns.

Agencies have submitted Make A Difference Day projects which are waiting to be adopted include the American Cancer Society, Flagler and Halifax Habitat for Humanity, Center for the Visually Impaired, PACE Center for Girls, The House Next Door, Homeless Assistance Corporation, Neighbor to Family, Child Care Resource Network, Second Chance Cat Rescue, Catholic Charities, Stewart-Marchman Center, Flagler Humane Society, Serenity House, Children’s Home Society, American Red Cross, The Children’s Advocacy Center, WORC/UCP Central Florida, and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Some of the businesses and organizations that have already committed to service projects for Make A Difference Day include Bank of America, Center for Business Excellence, DBCC, Home Depot-Palm Coast, Keiser College, Macy’s, National Association of Women in Construction, Shepherd of the Coast in Palm Coast, Target, UCF, United Way Women’s Initiative, Volusia County Bar Association, Volusia County Schools, and Wachovia Bank.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact the Volunteer Center of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties at 386-253-0563, ext. 239 or log-onto www.unitedway-vfc.org/MakeaDifferenceDay06.htm.
